Airsoft magazines aren’t universal and compatibility often depends on the gun platform or manufacturer. Check the manufacturers’ documentation, online forums and reputable airsoft websites to understand which mags are compatible with your gun.
High Capacity Magazines
Known as hi-caps or high capacity magazines, these are the most common in airsoft guns. They can hold hundreds of BBs and provide a lot more ammo to fire without having to stop and reload often. These magazines come with a mechanism that allows them to be loaded quickly. They work by a gearing system with a spur wheel that looks like a winding mechanism on the bottom of the magazine. Using a small wrench, you turn the wheel to create pressure and load a few BBs at a time into the reservoir.
While these magazines may seem dangerous, they are actually quite safe and can be used by anyone who is legally able to possess them. The same gun manufacturer that produces these magazines also makes versions with reduced ammo capacity to reduce the risk of injury.
The latest round of congressional efforts to restrict high-capacity gun magazines follows a deadly mass shooting in Virginia that was allegedly committed by a man who used a semiautomatic rifle equipped with an extended magazine. In the wake of the tragedy, New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez introduced legislation along with 27 of his colleagues to ban the sale, importation and manufacture of magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds.
These mags are available for purchase online and in stores, and many people are stocking up on them ahead of possible restrictions. Michael Cargill, owner of Central Texas Gunworks in Austin, says his customers are seeking higher ammo capacity out of fear of a ban, and are acting fast to obtain them.
He advises consumers to check whether their local airsoft field accepts high-capacity magazines before they buy them. If they do, he recommends buying a few different types of high-cap magazines to have a varied arsenal. In addition, he warns against leaving airsoft magazines with ammo in them as it puts the magazine under a constant tension that can cause damage over time.
Mid Cap Magazines
Unlike the High Cap Magazines that hold many rounds, Mid Cap Magazines have a tight spring that pushes BBs constantly into your gun without winding up the mag. This creates a smooth feed of BBs for the duration of the mag’s life and is very similar to how real firearm magazines work. This type of magazine is a good middle ground between the two styles and is widely used by more experienced players on the skirmish field.
Another advantage of this style is that it does not make a rattling noise while you are shooting. This can be important for some players, especially if they are playing in MilSim games that require realism in their gameplay.
These magazines also do not require as much maintenance as the High Caps. They only need to be inspected periodically to ensure the follower is not worn out. If the follower is worn out then it can cause a variety of issues, from misfeeds to jams.
The only drawback to the mid cap is that it takes a bit more time and effort to load them compared to a high cap magazine. Unless you have a speed loader, it can be difficult to get several of these magazines loaded before the game starts. For this reason, many players prefer to have a couple of these magazines with them while they are out in the field.
Regardless of the type of Airsoft Magazine you choose, they all have some advantages and disadvantages to them. The most important thing is to decide which kind of magazine fits your playstyle. If you like realism then a mid cap might be the best option for you, but if you want to pound away at your enemies with unlimited reloads then a high capacity magazine is probably a better choice. Just remember to keep your spare magazines on hand in case you run out of ammunition.
